SDE Feature Class envelope (max x / y) too large

$

ArcGIS Desktop 10.1 (sp2)
ArcSDE 10.1 (sp2) on Oracle 11.2.0.3
SUSE LINUX
ST_Geometry storage type

Editors working in protected versions that they own, SDE.Default is protected.
Data is all stored in GCS NAD 1983

Occasionally our editors report that they are no longer able to display certain feature classes in ArcMap. Typically it is because the spatial envelope of the feature class has been expanded to unrealistic values in the max-x and max-y for geographic...

Typical extents in our data:
Layer Envelope .......:
minx: -125.00000, miny: 41.00000
maxx: -116.00000, maxy: 50.00000

But sometimes we get max-x and max-y values of 500,000 or even over 1,000,000... certainly not likely values for degrees of latitude/longitude.

Resetting these values we know how do... I'd be curious if anyone knows what causes these envelopes to change to such values?

The editors are using standard ArcMap tools for entering geometry. Sometimes they edit in the projection of the SDE data, sometime they switch the data frame to UTM. Data loaded from other sources is typically via the copy/paste tools. I've run several tests with source data in the 3 most common projections our user's would obtain data in, and matched those with common data frame projections they might edit in, but haven't been able to reproduce the change to the envelope values. If anyone has seen this issue and found a possible cause we'd like to know... I think we reset an envelope every couple of weeks on at least on of our 40+ editable feature classes.

New Problem - Cannot export feature class to or from GDB

Within the past month, I've started experiencing problems with exporting data from either an mxd or another gdb, to a gdb. Or, importing shapefiles to a gdb. I get an error like:

"Error exporting data.
The item was not found. [ItemType:
{70737809-852C4A03-9E22-2CECEA5B9BFA}]
The table was not found. [feature class name] <- "feature class name" is of course the name of any feature class I try and export.

This started shortly before Christmas, I've not had any problems before that. As I mentioned, I cannot even import shapefiles into thegdb, I can export files out of the gdb as a .shp or even export from the mxd to a .shp but no into a gdb.

Currenty, I am using Win7 with ArcGis 10.0.

Any help of course would be greatly appreciated.

DBTUNE XML_COLUMN_STORAGE parameter settings

$

Hi Everyone:
Thanks in advance for any help. I'm posting this question for a co-worker to try and help with some questions we have.

Reference ESRI link:
http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesk...0000071000000/
Oracle 11.2.0.3 64-bit running on Windows 2008R2

On our Oracle database, we have two DBTUNE tables, one in SDE schema and one
in an SDE managed geo-database schema.

Both DBTUNE tables have the XML_COLUMN_STORAGE parameter set to DEFAULT, but
the reference article states the setting default is SDE_XML (not DEFAULT)
and mentions "Oracle XML" as the only other setting. This leaves one with
the assumption that ORACLE_XML would be the other allowed parameter setting.

Problem: Our Oracle XML package has become invalid and exports of the SDE
managed schema state "Export terminated unsuccessfully" with references to
two invalid Oracle XML packages: XDB.DBMS_XDBUTIL_INT and SYS.DBMS_CUBE_EXP
(which depends on the XDB package being valid)

Question: If DEFAULT is also an allowed setting, does this allow both
SDE_XML and ORACLE_XML to be used in an SDE-Managed geo-database schema?

Thanks again,
Wes

MS-SQL vs. PostgreSQL directly connected to ArcSDE

Hi Everyone,

I have a project related to either to oil or water wells. This well data is currently stored in a personal geodatabase (Access) because most data entry is done by non-GIS users via Access forms. My plan is to migrate the data to either a MS-SQL Server or PostgreSQL direct-connect geodatabase, link the tables back to Access, and to continue to use Access forms as a data-entry front-end. I already have a license for MS SQL, so that cost isn't such an issue. I'm inclined to go with PostgreSQL though because it looks like it may be faster and works well with other open-source software. Other coworkers are inclined to use MS-SQL because it may play nicer with Access. Please share your valuable information.

Thanks,
Hank

I'm trying to enable an enterprise geodatabase on a local SQL Express 2008R2 database using ArcGIS 10.1. I keep getting the error:

The error in the log file says:

I'm inclined to just uninstall and reinstall SQL Express 2008R2 and restore existing databases. SQL was installed on this machine with an older version of ArcGIS...probably 9.3. The machine is still running XP Pro. I've got another machine running Windows 7 Enterprise, ArcGIS 10.1 and clean install of SQL Express 2008R2 and I don't have any issues there. I'm guessing there are some weird legacy compatibility issues?

Any ideas?

when ArcSDE will support SQL Server 2014 ?

we are planning to update our enterprise SQL Server system, currently our SQL Server is 2008, since SQL Server 2014 is going to be released soon, we are suggested that it would be better to update SQL Server to 2014 instead of 2012.

We wonder when ESRI ArcSDE will support MS SQL Server 1014.

Thanks !!

How to silently install ArcSDE 10.1

Hello,

I'd much much appreciate it if someone could share the experience of having ArcSDE 10.x silently installed on Windows. I looked at the online help it doesn't provide the information while other ESRI products like ArcGIs for server 10.x provides the \qb option for silent install. There are a couple of websites have something like using msiexec /I ...setup.msi /qn .. however I tried both /qb and /qn options, it doesn't work.

ArcSDE service fails to start on 2008R2 server

Problem: Installed ArcSDE on new 2008R2 Server and configured it the same as existing instance on soon to be deprecated 2008 R1 server.

Service was created manually because the post install failed, and recommendation to use the -n option was implemented.

The service is created but will not start and stay started. It claims it cannot connect to the Oracle database instance, although the database is alive and reachable from the server in question.

Our suspicion is that there is a Local Security Policy that has locked down the machine, but we are not sure which one is affecting SDE.

Thanks

Geodatabase Connection to Oracle Active Data Guard Physical Standby

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

ENVIRONMENT

Database Server:
  • Oracle 11.2.0.2.0 Single-Instance Database on Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise 64-bit
  • Oracle Active Data Guard for Oracle Database 11g R2
  • ArcSDE for Oracle 11g 9.3.1 SP2 using SDELOB

Client Machine:
  • Oracle Client 11.2.0.1.0 on Windows 7 Enterprise
  • ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1 SP2 on Windows 7 Enterprise
  • ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1 SP2 QIP Patch
  • ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1 SP2 Geodatabase Patch
  • ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1 SP2 Geometric Network Patch

BACKGROUND

I have successfully created two standby databases from my primary Oracle database; one is a physical standby and the other is a logical standby. When attempting to connect to either of the standby databases using direct connect in ArcCatalog, I receive the following error: "Failed to connect to the specified server. Operation Failed". After some online research, it seemed like there may be an issue with the authorization of the geodatabase from a licensing perspective. This would make sense since the standby databases have a different DB_UNIQUE_NAME than the primary. Therefore, I tried to authorize both standby databases using the ArcSDE for Oracle 11g Post Installation, trying both of the standby database unique names as the NET SERVICE value. However, I end up with a similar error:

ESRI ArcSDE Server Setup Utility Tue Feb 04 13:33:01 2014
----------------------------------------------------------------
Error: Operation Failed (-1).
Error: Error upgrading authorization key.

It then occurs to me that both standby databases are running in read-only mode, which is expected when creating standby databases via Oracle Active Data Guard. After some more research, I find that it is possible to modify a standby database such that it can run in read-write mode. After modifying the physical standby to run in read-write mode, I am then able to authorize it using the ArcSDE for Oracle 11g Post Installation. Afterward, however, I was unable to resume the application of redo logs for the standby database which essentially broke the connection between my standby and my primary. This was evident after receiving a variety of Oracle errors (e.g., ORA-01665 and ORA-01153) when following the Oracle documentation for how to switch from the standby back to the primary.

QUESTION

Has anyone used ArcSDE in conjunction with Oracle Active Data Guard? If so, how am I able to make a geodatabase connection to the standby? I am trying to determine the high-level proper workflow for creating a standby database, authorizing the geodatabase, and subsequently configuring the standby to receive archived redo data from the primary database (using either Redo Apply or Real-Time Apply).

Again, thank you in advance for any help you can provide. If you require more information, please just let me know.

SQL View displays, but no attribute table/can't publish in ArcGIS Server

Using ArcMap 10.1 SP1, SQL 2008 R2, ArcGIS Server 10.1 SP1.

The following view works perfectly in SQL:

Code:

SELECT
CRGIS.dbo.CR_LINK.INSPEC_REQ AS 'Inspection Required',
CRGIS.dbo.CR_LINK.INSPEC_DATE AS 'Date Inspected',
CRGIS.dbo.CR_LINK.CR_ID AS 'CR Link TBL ID',
CRGIS.dbo.CR_LINK.GlobalID AS 'CR Link GLB ID',
CRGIS.dbo.CR_LINK.LCS_ID AS 'CR Link TBL LCS ID',
CRGIS.dbo.CR_LINK.ASMIS_ID AS 'CR Link ASMIS ID',
CRGIS.dbo.CR_LINK.FMSS_ID AS 'CR Link FMSS ID',
CRGIS.dbo.CRSITE_PT.SURVEY_ID AS 'CR Point Survey ID',
CRGIS.dbo.CRSITE_PT.GlobalID AS 'CR Point GLB ID',
CRGIS.dbo.CRSITE_PT.RESNAME AS 'Resource Name',
CRGIS.dbo.CRSITE_PT.X_Coord AS 'X Coordinate',
CRGIS.dbo.CRSITE_PT.Y_Coord AS 'Y Coordinate',
CRGIS.dbo.CRSITE_PT.LAT AS 'Latitude',
CRGIS.dbo.CRSITE_PT.LON AS 'Longitude',
CRGIS.dbo.CRSITE_PT.OBJECTID,
CRGIS.dbo.CRSITE_PT.SHAPE FROM
CRGIS.dbo.CR_LINK
RIGHT JOIN
CRGIS.dbo.CRSITE_PT ON CRGIS.dbo.CR_LINK.CR_ID = CRGIS.dbo.CRSITE_PT.CR_ID
where
CRGIS.dbo.CR_LINK.ASMIS_ID is NOT NULL
and
CRGIS.dbo.CR_LINK.INSPEC_REQ ='Yes'
and
CRGIS.dbo.CR_LINK.INSPEC_DATE is NULL

However, when using the "Make Query Layer" tool in ArcMap, the points show up in the map, but no attributes (regardless of what I choose for a primary key/index. Same error when using ArcToolbox "Create View" tool.

CRGIS.dbo.CRSITE_PT is a versioned, SQL_Geometry feature class that has no problems and has been working in SDE for over a year now.

We have a requirement to publish, as a map service, the feature class/related table data as a stand-alone application.

How to extract metadata from SDE tables

Hello,

I'm looking for a way to extract metadata from the SDE tables (oracle 11g, AG Desktop 10.1).
I think metadata are stored in the system table GDB_ITEMS (field DOCUMENTATION).

But how to extract metadata from this table?

Thank you.

Finding duplicate records and making changes to mutiple attributes

$

Hi,
I'm a newb to geodatabases (and databases) and I have two questions.

I have a tree inventory that I need to update records for. I am updating the records manually. Based on an important attribute, the TREE_ID, I have noticed some duplicate records. TREE_ID is supposed to be the unique identifier for each tree. For example, finding two records that both list 4333 as the TREE_ID. Is there a way I can search for duplicate records?

Each record has several attributes. Three of the attributes use the same data, the identification number assigned to the tree. For example, the record for tree # 3233 has "3233" under a TREE_ID, SPECIES_ID, and SPECIES_ID_1 attribute. If tree 3233 gets changed to 11001, is there a way to update the attributes at the same time? Or do I need to go to each attribute in the record to change the number?

I am at a confused look on my face. I have a feature that is a static dataset, but for some reason I started getting an error about 2 weeks ago saying that "Only one spatial column is supported in this operation". Has anyone else seen this and if so how to resolve it. I can view the feature in SQL Management Studio, but not in ArcGIS.

SDE compress with locks

$

I am trying to come up with a compress workflow. I was hoping someone had clarification for what happens to states when users or web map services are looking at the data when a compress is run.

Here is the scenario: We have a primary SDE that all general users and all web services access to use GIS data. Then we have an editing SDE where GIS editors modify the data. That data is then synced to the primary SDe nightly. Currently the primary SDE is entirely unversioned, however now we want to host a dataset with a geometric network. To update this dataset the primary SDE will need to have versions(we'd probably just edit default directly) and once the sync is complete we'd need to a compress. However its my understanding that if there is a lock on states in an SDE then the compress will ignore the lineage for the state that's being viewed. So I'm not sure we'd get an effective compress if lots of users and web maps are looking at DEFAULT. I'd like to avoid kicking everyone off the server if I can, even if its at night since the web services are accessed external to our organization. There really isnt any other editing on the server... only nightly python/FME data pushes through non-versioned operations.

Thanks for any help you can provide

Lock errors on NAS, none on Windows Server

$

Hi Folks,

We've run into a very frustrating and hard to pin down problem writing certain kinds of data to our NAS devvice, a QNAP TS-879U-RP, firmware v4.0.5. I'd be extremely grateful for any light you may be able to shed on the issue, which is:

Certain operations from ArcMap always fail when the destination is on the NAS, and always succeed when the destination is a local drive or Windows Server 2003 (x64). We've replicated this from 3 different client machines (albeit all Win7x64), and from 3 different user profiles. We've disabled oplocks on the shares from the QNAP admin console, to no avail.

How do we troubleshoot this?

The application: ArcMap v10.2.1 (first noticed at 10.2. Not sure about 10.1).
The operation: Feature Class To Feature Class (Conversion)

Details from Arcmap results pain:

Code:

    Executing: FeatureClassToFeatureClass Z:\source\simple_box.shp Z:\out\default.gdb from_Arcmap_nas_no_oplocks # "Name "Name" true true false 60 Text 0 0 ,First,#,Z:\source\simple_box.shp,Name,-1,-1" #
    Start Time: Wed Feb 05 10:05:16 2014
ERROR 000210: Cannot create output Z:\out\default.gdb\from_Arcmap_nas_no_oplocks
    Invalid function arguments
    Invalid function arguments
    Cannot acquire a lock.
The table was not found. [from_Arcmap_nas_no_oplocks]
    Failed to execute (FeatureClassToFeatureClass).
Failed at Wed Feb 05 10:05:18 2014 (Elapsed Time: 2.04 seconds)

Interestingly, the same process run straight from a python command shell works (see attached). This leads me to think QNAP is treating the desktop application, ArcMap, and the sub-shell geo-processing operation as two different users/machines. Or something.

I've contacted Esri Tech Support, and we've gone through a few rounds on it, but essentially the response is: since the operation is fine on Windows Server and fine on the local machine, it's not their application, and thus they're not in a position to do anything about it.

Other operations which we've had fail but are harder to narrow down into a simple recipe like the above are:
  • "Failed to past feature_class_name. Cannot acquire a schema lock because of an existing lock" when copy pasting a feature class with a relationship class from one file gdb to another
  • "Could not load data from the data source. If you can correct the problem, press the refresh button to reload the data. Possible problems can include bad network connection, invalid field, etc. Cannot acquire a lock. Cannot acquire a lock." when running Calculate Field on a shapefile

I'd really like to solve this, as it's a deal breaker for the device. If we can't rely it on for our bread and butter application, out the door it goes (but I like the qnap!).
