Hello, i want to develop some skills in ArcSDE. Can anyone recommend any training courses that will give me a good introduction and solid grounding. They need to be either cheap or free however! Thanks for any help

Shape Integrity Error
Dear Users,
I'm suffering an annoying problem: I'm working with ArcGIS 10.1 and I'm connected to an SDE 10.1. When I try to copy a certain Feature Class to a local file GDB ESRI tells me, that it can't copy because there are shape integrity erros. I'm sure it is because of invalid geometries. Now the question is how to find out which Features exactly cause the Problem.
I don't know how to get this Information. Maybe you have an idea...
Thank you in advance

Renaming a projection definition
We use a custom projection for our geodatabase and it has always been named "NAD_1983_Transverse_Mercator". I would like to change the name of the projection to something less generic that captures the name of our company in the title, for example "Idaho_Power_Transverse_Mercator". The projection parameters remain the same, just the title would change. I've tried using the Define Projection tool but it fails to write over any existing projection parameters. Can I remove a projection definition in a geodatabase and then run the Define Projection tool to reassign the parameters? Any other suggestions?
Thanks

User Schema Geodatabase Creation Errors
Using ArcGIS 10.1, ArcSDE 10.1 and Oracle 11 R2.
We have successfully created our SDE Master schema and exactly 1 User Schema Geodatabase on our Oracle instance.
We cannot seem to create another successfully.
We are using the Create Enterprise Geodatabase tool and all required permissions are granted to both the SDE user and the User Schema User in which we will be creating the child Geodatabase: (All of which seems like overkill since we are using the SYS account to run the tool as required.)
On our second attempt to create a User Schema Database, the tool got through the table creation part, but exited with an error before creating the view objects.
On all subsequent attempts the tool gets as far as creating a user, (if not existing,) but will create no objects beyond that.
Does anybody have this experience and can anybody offer suggestions?
Thank You!

Restore geodatabase from windows backup
Hi - my hard drive failed last week and I have been in the process of restoring my backup files. All my files, including a geodatabase (858 MB) that I really need to access, were backed up with Windows 7 Backup. I attempted to restore this geodatabase, however have had no luck accessing any of the data stored within it. I then copied the folder from the backup to an external hard drive but have been unsuccessful at opening it with Catalog or ArcMap, it just shows up as empty even though it is listed as 858 MB. Does anyone have any suggestions for accessing the data within the geodatabase? I'm not a computer whiz and just want to retrieve my data!
Thanks

Replica practice question
Hi,
We have a SQL base 2 way replica. Version 10. Whenever I add data in a certian way the synchronize fails. I was trying to come up with a way to add new data from a file GDB the sychozation fails. I had x features in the FC of the child DB. I deleted those features and added the feature that were in the file GDB. Saved the data. compressed the data and synchronized the replica. Every tiome that I do it this way I get the new features plus the existing features in the parent GDB. Is the way I did that incorrect? Must be because it didn't work.
In the past I created the new file GDB and then brought the replica down added the data to both side and rebuilt the replica. It always worked fine but caused downtime for all users. The 911 system is using that replica.
Is there a way to do this without bringing the system down?
Thanks.

Select by Attribute Issue
I have a file geodatabase that is storing a number of important features for my project. When I add a feature to an ArcMap document and run Select by attribute (either from the tools or from the toolbar) over many of the fields, I get more features selected than I should. For example, if there is a field called ID with the values A, B, C, D and I select ID="A", I may get "A" and "B" returned as selected. I am running a New Selection, so that isn't the cause of the problem. The files I am working with are quite large- over 160,000 features. Any ideas?

Synchronize Replica failed: The operation was attempted on an empty geometry
I have a replica that refuses to sync due to an empty geometry error.
Some details regarding the data:
* Software is ArcGIS 10. Desktop is SP4; however, I am uncertain as to what SP is applied to SDE. I can certainly find out, if needed.
* Performing checkout/check-in replication - the replica is a file geodatabase.
* The data being replicated does participate in a geometric network and we are using the full model.
* Even though the intent to add features existed at the time of replica creation, there may be an empty feature class in the replica database at the time of sync. I'm uncertain if or how this could affect synchronization, but I'm listing it as a detail, just in case...
* We have utilized the Verify Network Feature Geometry and Network Build Error tools from the Geometric Network Editing toolbar and both return their respective message for all features being valid.
* We ran Data Reviewer Invalid Geometry checks against the feature classes in the parent database, as well as the feature classes in the replica. In the parent database, for the extent we are replicating, there were 2 features returned from the check. In the replica database, there were 4 features returned from the check. We have edited/corrected all invalid features; however, we still receive the error when attempting to sync.
Has anyone ran into this issue before? Any ideas, troubleshooting tips, etc... would be most appreciated. At this point, we don't mind deleting the replica and starting over; however, I foresee us hitting this again and would love to put my finger on the exact cause of this issue.

RuntimeError: Function requires a state to be set for stream
ArcStandard 10.1, versioned editing, remote SDE 10.0 on MS SQL, Win7-64, python 2.7, editing line fc of geometric network
RuntimeError: Function requires a state to be set for stream [...sde path to fc...][STATE_ID = 0]
Failed on a cursor update (rows.updateRow(row)) (not sure if it's relevant where it failed though)
I'm stepping through lines and copying data to the line from points intersecting the endpoints of the line. I'm running this against a little more than 4000 lines. The above error popped up after processing the 513th line. After the above error I copied the entire geometric network to a local file GDB, ran the same script, at it successfully completed all 4000+ lines.
Suggestions?
PS: the script runs from my ArcMap project so I just realized I may have posted this to the wrong forum. Can someone comment on that too?

Direct Connect driver release isn't compatible with ArcSde database instance release
I am a vendor working on some customer problems. One of my inititives is to backup their existing Microsoft SQL server 2008 R2 64-bit databases, including some arcgis ones. I have been successfully able to restore databases, but when my product starts any GIS-related function gives an application error that the "Direct Connect driver release isn't compatible with ArcSde database instance release" I've included the entire text of the Windows application log error.
As I understand it, this error is thrown when a version of ARCSDE is incompatible with ARCGIS Runtime Engine. When running the patchfinder.exe utlility, both ArcGIS Engine Runtime 9.3 Service Pack 1 and ArcGIS ArcSDE for SQL Server 9.3 Service Pack 1 are visible. After installing ArcSDE 9.3 SP1, I ran the post installation utility and upgraded the geodatabases.
Does anyone know what else we can try? Should we try to upgrade to 9.3.1? If so, where can I obain a copy of ArcGIS Engine Runtime 9.3.1?

DBTune parameter on Multiple Enterprise Geodatabase ArcSDE 10.1
Hi All,
I'm working with Oracle 11.2, ArcSDE 10.1 and ArcGIS 10.1 and I have created multiple enterprise geodatabase from Arc Catalog. It means I have 10 enterprise geodatabase and one SDE enterprise geodatabaseall, all have its own user administrator.
My requirement is, I have to separate the index tablespace and data tablespace by editing DBtune file for each enterprise geodatabase.
In case of SDE, there is no problem I can export and import the edited dbtune file. But in case of other 10 Enterprise geodatabase only export command is working, if I want to import edited dbtune file using sdedbtune command it gives me error "insufficient privileges".
Need an expert advice. Please its urgent.
Thanks in Advance

number of parts in shape is incorrect for its geometry type error on copy/paste
Hi
I'm trying to migrate a feature class (approx 16 million records) from a 9.2 SDE database (Oracle) to a 10.1 SDE database (SQL Server). I've extracted the data from 9.2 to a file geodatabase via copy/paste successfully. However, when attempting to copy/paste from the file geodatabase to the 10.1 SDE database it fails and gives the following error:
"number of parts in shape is incorrect for its geometry type"
I've run Check Geometry and it reveals some short segments and null geometries. I've then run Repair Geometry successfully, but when attempting to copy/paste the repaired feature class I get the same error.
What I can't quite understand is that the data originates from an SDE database, albeit 9.2, so surely shouldn't have features that are not valid in SDE. Also, I would have expected Repair Geometry to fix any geometry errors.
Anyone got any idea what might be causing the data not to copy into 10.1 SDE? Also any bright ideas for a work-around would be appreciated as I need to get this data loaded.
The source system is:
SDE 9.2 sp5
ArcGIS Desktop 9.2 sp5
Oracle 10g using binary storage
The target system is:
SDE 10.1 sp1
ArcGIS Desktop 10.1 sp1 plus SQL Server 2012 patch

Layer file to ArcSDE
Evening everyone,
I created a layer file from an existing Land Use which I want the color scheme to remain the same as it is used by different users.
Then I import both files, the Shape file, and the layer file in which I created from the Land Use shp file, to an ArcSDE database. However, when I view the layer file in ArcSDE database from ArcCatalog no color scheme show. Everything is in black and white. Can someone help me figure out what I am doing wrong.
By the way, I am using ArcGIS 10 (Arc Info).

Documenting fields
Hi
I'm currently trying to document our geodatabases for deployment and would like to add descriptions (not aliases) to my fields. I can't see anywhere to do this per field. Adding metadata is necessary anyway, but we'd like to be able to access that information in one place, ideally access those descriptions programmatically (using python), and ideally do it once. Using metadata alone is just a waste of time because we have to copy all the field information manually between aggregations of our tables.
What happened to reducing duplication of effort? Every other piece of database software has a provision for adding comments to individual fields, why not ArcGIS? I hope I've missed something because editing metadata is painful.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks

Creating Versions at Feature Class level
Is it possible to only create versions of a single feature class in a feature dataset?
For example: If I have two editors working on each of their own version of a feature dataset, 1) editing trees 2) editing irrigation -- I want them to be able to view the default version of the layers but want to avoid them posting changes accidentally. Is it possible to set up the dataset some how? Where user 1 can view irrigation and user 2 can only view trees?

Calculate field based on sum of other fields
Working with a personal geodatabase, I am trying to calculated a field for a layer that contains 5000+ polygons based on the sum of 7 other fields. I.e., every polygon has either a "1" or a "<null>" value in each of the 7 fields. If one of the polygons has 4 "1" values and 3 "<null>" values, I want my new field to show a "4."
When I carry out the calculate field command (sum_all= [field1]+[field2]...etc.) the program takes several hours to process the command, but no change occurs in the new (sum_all) field.
I hope that there is a simply solution, any help is much appreciated!
